How does your local news make you feel?

Sorry to go off topic but I've recently read some local news stories that seem to resonate in odd ways with me. Specifically:
  • Business Week, in their April 18-24 edition, ran a multi page story titled "The Real Deficits of Nassau County: How one of the nation's wealthiest counties went broke." In the article, Robert B. Ward, deputy director of the Rockefeller Institute of Government was quoted, "Nassau is an extreme example of our national problem." I live in Nassau County.
  • Newsday, our local newspaper, reported this week that "Freeport Mayor Andrew Hardwick, citing unspecified threats, has started carrying a gun, constructed a new security system at Village Hall, posted armed cops at village board meetings and had Nassau police install "panic buttons" at his home and office." While I don't live in Freeport, it is a village in my previously mentioned broke county.
  • The most talked about story per many of the local media outlets involve our beaches. No, not how world famous some may think they but the stories center around the dead bodies they have recently found. Up to 10 people's remains have been found. They are still searching for more.
Isn't Long Island a special place? All we need is Joey Buttafuco to rise to prominence once again and we can all feel even more of that special home town feeling.

I avoid watching local news at all costs. I prefer to get my updates via Facebook, blogs, and twitter. I mean, if something really important is happening, I can find out that way, right?

Seriously though...I do avoid watching local news, especially if my kids are in the room. It's just too disturbing. SoCal is no different than Long Island, and I don't want them to have nightmares.

I am taking a vacation from the news. Any news, but especially local news. Now I feel so much better about the world around me.

The news that has resonated most with me lately (other than great local coverage of my son's volleyball matches) has been two stories about solo female runners being attacked and sexually assaulted...one not far from where I work and one on the route of my 21 mile run. On the plus side, my large dog has been getting even more exercise lately.

Exactly why I dont watch the news and only read the sports page. I live in my own little world and oblivious to whats going on. TO me, its better that way

"The Real Deficits of Nassau County.."

Wow, that is some crack journalism, a serious article using a play on words from the "The Real House wives.." series? Well done Business Week.

My local news is much different! It is articles like:

"Even more large business moves to Texas from Nassau County: A case of over taxation at state and local levels."

Sorry, couldn't resist - but I knew you'd like it.

It seems like in the Midwest we only hear "the bad things" about the East Coast. The media makes it out to be a place you'll get murdered if you even fly over - but there are obviously millions of wonderful things about it.

Just like the media paints everyone in the Midwest as shoeless idiots, but I have a lot of really smart friends - and most of 'em wear shoes.

I don't watch/read the news too much anymore. I often feel it depresses me and doesn't do any good. I just get my husband to let me know about major events I should be aware.

Head in the sand, I know...
